My time in Ypres, Belgium

The Sunday before last I headed to London to catch the Eurostar to Belgium. It was my first time traveling on the Eurostar and my first time visiting Belgium, so I was rather excited.

I took this trip as I was one of the 35 young people, out of others from The UK, Germany and Denmark, who had been selected to take part in the Make Film, Make History project with The Imperial War Museum and in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut (Germany), Mosede Fort (Denmark) and Chocolate Films (London).

The three day trip was spent in Ypres. Between attending workshops, we were took on tours of the place, as well as having time to roam around freely, whilst we took it upon ourselves to spend the evenings productively, sampling the Belgian beer.

I’d never before seen such a clean and quiet town. I had remarked early on in the trip how it felt like a show town and then later I found out that the whole of Ypres had been destroyed during The First World War, then rebuilt again afterwards to look the same. It was quite a beautiful place to explore but I must say it did have a sort of eerie calm about the place. Maybe I’m just more attuned to a busy bustling city. Either way, I really enjoyed my time there and actually felt like one extra day on the trip would have been nice. I was certainly in great company and I’m happy to say that the whole group got on really well and we had such a laugh together.

I always love exploring parts of Europe that I’ve never been to before. It’s certainly got me eager to plan my next trip. Which European city or town would you love to visit?

What a stunning city! And that waffle looks amazing.
I’ve only been to a few places in Europe (Barcelona, and various places in Poland). I’d love to go back to Poland and properly take the place in. I was only 11 last time so I didn’t really take anything in.

It really was very picturesque… I love Barcelona, it’s a place I’ve been drawn back to time and time again.

I know what you mean with not taking places in when you’re young, I went to Paris multiple times as a child but I really should go back now I’m grown up to get a new prospective on the place. 🙂

What gorgeous pictures! I loved my time in Belgium, but sadly have never visited Ypres. It’s on my list though! Looks like you had such an amazing time, and I love the look of that waffle with Nutella! Thanks for sharing, amazing post!

    Hi Samio,

I love reading your blog. I think I’m slightly obsessed, okay Maybe a little more than slightly.
I am from South Africa which is the complete opposite to the European lifestyle but I can assure you, we would love to have you down here.

Thank you for inspiring me to always be my natural self. That’s rare in this world.
    Love.

Thank you so much Danelle! That’s really kind of you to say and I’m truly glad that you love reading my blog. Your words are much appreciated!

I hope to visit as many different places as possible, so hopefully I’ll get to South Africa at some point too. =D
